Matt Hodgson

Matt is a native of Florida, born in Miami, raised in Fort Lauderdale near the edge of the Everglades, and lived in the Orlando area until relocating to New Hampshire to work at Dartmouth. He began studying music at age six, added trombone at 11 and violin at 14.

SAMSUNG CSCAfter graduating from high school, he attended the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University to study trombone, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Trombone Performance and two Master’s degrees in Performance and Pedagogy. Highlights from this period include two performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and serving as a regular rotational substitute with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. After graduating, he served as a general manager for a youth arts organization in South Florida and taught music at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale. One of his proudest achievements was in establishing the Orchestral Academy of the Tropics, a summer music institute that brought together professional orchestral musicians from around the country to work with young musicians, particularly underserved minorities and those with limited socio-economic means, in an intensive two week program of study.

Though he enjoyed working in the arts, Matt made a conscious decision to change careers, and moved to IT in 1998, working in the manufacturing and aerospace industries until returning to higher education at Broward College as an IT technician. During the years that followed, he was progressively promoted to Campus Technical Support Supervisor, and eventually to Systems Engineer, specializing in Directory technologies and culminating in receiving recognition as Novell’s Directory Engineer of the Year in 2002. Matt continued to teach at the College, switching from Music to Computer Science, and obtained a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems in support of that effort.

In 2004, Matt moved to Central Florida and began working in the healthcare industry, where he managed a team of 16 architects, systems administrators, and database administrators in supporting a distributed infrastructure of 5,000 servers in support of 35,000 healthcare providers servicing over 125,000 patients across the United States. The work was exciting and meaningful, as Matt and his team participated in several acquisitions and integrations that tripled the size of the company while ensuring that patient care felt no impact from the incredibly fast-paced rate of change that the growing company experienced during those years.

In 2012, seeking a change of atmosphere once again, Matt accepted an opportunity to become manager of the Application Infrastructure Group at Dartmouth, and returned to his roots in higher education. Forgoing the warm winters and theme parks of Central Florida, he bought a Subaru Outback and loaded up his wife Lisa and their two boys, Ian and Nate, and headed for the Granite State. family

It has been great to explore the traditions and embrace the innovations of Dartmouth, and engage with the dynamic team that he is lucky to work with. He looks forward to embracing all that Dartmouth, the Upper Valley, and New England has to offer.
