Hi! My name is Louise Barias and I am currently a Junior at Dartmouth College double majoring in Ecological and Evolutionary Biology and African and African American Studies. I’m from Boston, MA and I’m a first-generation Dominican-American. Since I was 3 months old I’ve been traveling back and forth between two homes- Bani, DR and Boston, MA. Being raised in this dynamic cultural environment has shaped my interests and passions, which I’ve been fortunate to explore in college. Some of my interests are public health and development in Latin American countries. Growing up in Bani, I have vivid memories of playing outside on a dirt road, and seeing my great grandparents raise chicken, pigs and goats. Now when I go back, the community has grown into a middle class suburb, a dramatic transformation that has always fascinated me. I want to explore how world development goals affect communities like my family in Bani. Public health has also been a big focus in my life, and I like to think through ways that medical aid and services are delivered to countries like the Dominican Republic.

At Dartmouth, I’m involved in the Dartmouth Caribbean Connection, a member of the EE Just Society for STEM students, a Global Health Fellow, and a Student Intern for Latinx students at the Office of Plurism and Leadership, and this December, I will be participating in the CCESP In Nicaragua with the Dartmouth Center for Service. I am very excited to visit Nicaragua and engage with Nicaraguenses and their culture, and sharing my culture as well.
