GSC Holiday Food Drive

On November 23, 2011 by Grad Forum

As the holiday season kicks off in Hanover, Dartmouth’s Graduate Student Council (GSC) is preparing to help those in greatest need within our own community.

The GSC Holiday Food Drive is the largest community service outreach program that the Council organizes. Last year’s food drive raised over 1,300 items for local food banks, with contributions coming from all of Dartmouth’s 19 graduate programs.

The GSC Departmental Representatives have placed food drive donation boxes in each department’s main office/lounge, and are encouraged to ‘rally the troops’ to donate non-perishable food items in the upcoming weeks.

In the GSC Holiday Food drive, Dartmouth’s graduate departments compete against one another not only to collect the most items, but also decorate their collection bins in hopes of wining the ‘Prettiest Food Box’ contest .  While the competition often gets heated, the larger aim of helping those in need is always the main goal.

“The food drive is a fun competition, and announcing the winning departments is always a highlight of the GSC Holiday Party,” says Wes Whitaker, GSC President.  “I think all of the graduate students enjoy the competition because it allows us all to give back to the Upper Valley durring the holidays. It’s important that the GSC provides a platform for Dartmouth’s graduate students to stay civically engaged within the local community.”

The GSC sponsored a similar drive during last year’s Winter Semi-Formal, in which attendees were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate.  In addition to their annual food drives, the GSC also sponsored an emergency drive for food, clothing, and supplies to aid in Hurricane Irene relief efforts this past summer.

All of the food donated will go to the Upper Valley Haven Food Shelf.  The results will be tallied and the winning department will be announced at the GSC Holiday Party on December 8th, 2011. Last year’s winning departments chose to donate their prize in the form of a monetary donation to the Haven in lieu of a pizza party.

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

Make sure to help out your department, and donate non-perishable food items before December’s Holiday Party.

  • To clarify, all reps should bring their collected non-perishables and decorated boxes to next week’s Holiday Party during set up. At the DOC House, student volunteers will count the number of items collected by each department, and select the best decorated box.

The next morning, all donated items will be dropped off at the Upper Valley Haven!

  • Wow! Thank you all community members for donating to the Holiday Food Drive. Together, we raised 989 items for the Upper Valley Haven.

-The Psychological & Brain Sciences Department (PBS) won the “Best Decorated Box” contest with their three-box-tall “Grinch Who Stole Christmas” donation center.

-The Mathematics Department donated the most items, with a total of 267 non-perishable items.
