Chemistry Department Highlights

On January 9, 2012 by Grad Forum

Several chemistry faculty members recently garnered significant awards. Russ Hughes was awarded the 2010 ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry, which Dave Lemal was awarded in 2002, and Russ and Dave joined department chair Peter Jacobi as ACS Fellows. Joe BelBruno was given Dartmouth’s 2011 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award, awarded annually to members of the Dartmouth faculty who exemplify a deep commitment to fostering the professional and personal development of graduate students.

Gordon Gribble gave an invited talk, “Food Contaminants and Chemophobia,” at the “Food Safety vs. Food Security: A Global Challenge” conference in the Netherlands in October. Dartmouth’s annual Filene Teaching Award, given to the graduate student teaching assistant who best exemplifies the qualities of a college educator, was awarded to Jennifer Taylor. Jenn joins seven other chemistry students who have won this award in the nine years it has existed.

We welcomed the first two graduate students, Jessica Son and Walt Russ, to our new Master’s Program in Biophysical Chemistry. This “4+1” program provides a master’s degree in one year to Dartmouth students after they have completed their AB degree work. Research is conducted with one of our five biophysical chemistry faculty who founded this program.

Our PhD program welcomed a class of ten new students this fall, and they have been busy taking courses and starting research.  Two of Ivan Aprahamian’s students, Yin Yang and Xin Su, have produced a novel solid-state acid-base sensor. Their work is published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal Chemical Science. Finally, look out Hollywood! Two of our faculty, Jimmy Wu and Ivan Aprahamian, have created instructional videos. Jimmy’s videos were produced in collaboration with Lorie Loeb and Jodie Mack of Dartmouth’s computer science and film/media studies departments, while Ivan’s videos on self-assembly have their own YouTube page.
