New Graduate Student Council (GSC) President Erin O’Malley led the last GSC meeting of the year on Tuesday, June 3.

The meeting opened with discussion of two important graduate student issues: the extended evening Advance Transit bus service and childcare. The Advance Transit evening shuttle will not run during the summer, but service will begin again in the fall, and the GSC plans to work toward year-round service. In addition, all graduate students are encouraged to complete the childcare survey emailed out by Dartmouth’s Office of Institutional Research, even if they do not have children, so that the GSC and the Graduate Studies Office can assess the current childcare needs of the graduate community.

Another ongoing initiative of the new GSC executive board is the creation of a Dartmouth Graduate Professional Student Assembly, which would include arts and sciences graduate students, as well as students in the professional schools on campus. The Assembly will sponsor joint events and all-inclusive Nerd Nites. Other upcoming events include:

  • The Prouty is fast approaching on July 12. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Service Chair David Strickland. Volunteers are needed for the children’s face-painting tent.
  • The Summer Luau will be held on Sunday, August 10 at the Dartmouth Outing Club House on Occom Pond.
  • Plans are in the works to expand the Science Cafés to include opportunities to go to local schools and present research. More information will be available soon!

Check out the newly redesigned GSC website to review meeting minutes, learn more about GSC student organizations, and find information about funding. Also, visit the website’s events calendar to stay in the know about upcoming events. Click the “Submit Event” link to advertise your graduate student events as well.

GSC meetings will resume in August and be held on the first Tuesday of the month in the Life Sciences Center starting (typically) at 5:30 pm—first meeting: August 5. If you would like more information or have any questions about the GSC, contact the president, Erin O’Malley!

The GSC wishes everyone a great summer!
