Speaker: Roy Wade MD, PhD, MPH, Geisel 07
Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane.”
The linkages between social inequity, civil rights, and modern day health disparities are strong. Nearly 60 years after the Civil Rights Movement began, health disparities persist and in fact are worsening in many sectors of our society, spreading beyond racial/ethnic lines to impact all marginalized populations. We will review the factors that lead to these disparities, identifying strategies to promote health in vulnerable populations. Finally, we will close our discussion with a small group break out session, encouraging participants to develop their own targeted approaches to decreasing health disparities in their own communities.
