Symposium: “The Torch Has Been Passed”

I’m in Tokyo this week to attend a symposium, sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Library and Waseda University, called “The Torch Has Been Passed: JFK’s Legacy Today.” As part of this symposium, Monday I gave a talk for the JFK Library on US-Japan relations, in which I described my research on the 1960s and the Kennedy years in the US-Japan alliance.

The big event of the symposium is Wednesday, at Okuma Auditorium at Waseda University, featuring speeches by Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, President Bill Clinton, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Michelle Obama and her daughters will be there too. It’s a deeply symbolic place for US-Japan relations: a meaningful place to celebrate the alliance, 70 years after World War II.
