A Peek at Chinese Regional Hegemony

My article, “Life in China’s Asia,” appears in the March/April issue of Foreign Affairs. In the article I draw on previous cases of regional hegemony — Chinese, Japanese, Soviet, and American — to contemplate what living in a Chinese-dominated Asia would be like. I argue that like these previous regional hegemons, China will employ all economic, military, political, and cultural tools to dominate the region. Chinese economic coercion and political interference in its neighbors’ domestic politics will be commonplace. China’s neighbors — particularly Japan — must contemplate this vision as they are formulating their responses to China’s rise.
