Holds/Recalls/Pages

You follow the same basic procedures to place holds on books and to recall them.

HOLDS:
1-Select Check Out (Circulation Desk) from the drop down menu in Sierra.
2-In the box that says “key or scan patron barcode” wand in the patron’s ID barcode.
3-Select Holds from the list on the left
4-Then select the Add Holds tab
5-Choose how you want to search for the item from the drop-down box; you may search by author, title, or LC call number
6-Double click on the correct item
7-Click on Hold Selected Item
8-Click on Place Hold (the second choice)
9-Choose pickup location from drop down box.  It will default to Paddock, which is where our patrons usually want to pick up the item.
10-Click OK

RECALLS:
Note: we do not place recalls on RESERVE items.
Follow steps 1-10 under HOLDS
11-Click the top option in the box that pops up: “Recall item with a due date of….”

*** NOTE!! If you get the message, “Item .i…… is not holdable by patron .p…….” just click “OVERRIDE.” This message automatically happens for student patron types, both undergraduate and graduate.

PAGING:
Paging refers to placing holds on books from Dartmouth libraries other than Paddock

Follow steps 1-7 for HOLDS
8-Click “Place hold; print paging slip” No slip will print out here; this is so that the slip will print out at the library from which the book is coming.
9-Choose location if other than Paddock from the drop down box in the pop up box.
10-Click OK.

Cancel a hold
1-Select Check Out (Circulation Desk) from the drop down menu in Sierra.
2-In the text box type in n + the last name, first name of the patron, ex; nsmith, john
3-Click on the Holds tab.
4-Select the item for which you want to cancel the hold.
5-Click “Cancel Holds”
6-Click “Cancel Hold” from the box that pops up.
7-Click “No” for printing the cancellation notice.
