About the Director of Planning

Joanna Whitcomb – Director of Campus Planning

Ms. Whitcomb accepted Dartmouth’s first campus planner position in late 2006.  As the Director of Campus Planning, Joanna is responsible for the implementation and oversight of the campus master plan including space planning, landscape design, architectural programming, spatial policy development, and sustainability strategies. Ms. Whitcomb works closely with senior staff and colleagues on capital planning program development, feasibility studies for major renovation and new construction projects, and planning for Dartmouth’s residential and commercial portfolios and Town/Gown interface.

Prior to joining the College, for nearly a decade, Ms. Whitcomb was a partner with Burnt Rock, Inc. Associates in Community Planning based in Waitsfield, Vermont. Burnt Rock provided an extensive range of services to local governments, state and regional agencies, non-profit organizations and citizen groups.  Throughout her career, Joanna’s professional focus has been sustainable development and resource protection.

Ms. Whitcomb is certified with the American Institute of Certified Planners, a member of the American Planning Association and the Society of College and University Planners. She has a MS in Resource Administration and Management from the University of New Hampshire and a BS in Physical Geography and Environmental Science from McGill University.  Joanna lives in Hanover with her family, where she is involved in numerous community organizations.
