Climate models predict a warmer future for New England rivers, but groundwater flows may provide refugia for aquatic organisms in otherwise thermally unsuitable habitat. What are the fitness consequences of spatial thermal heterogeneity, do organisms adapt to local thermal conditions, and ultimately will populations persist in a warming world? My research begins to address some of these questions at the intersection of ecology, evolution, and freshwater conservation.
