Biography: Tyler Stovall is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is also Dean of the Humanities Division.  He has also taught at the Ohio State University and UC-Berkeley.  He recently finished a term as President of the American Historical Association.  He specializes in the history of modern and twentieth century France. Professor Stovall has written and edited several books on the subject, including Paris Noir:  African Americans in the City of Light (1996), and Transnational France: The Modern History of a Universal Nation (2015). He is currently writing a global history of the relationship between freedom and race titled White Freedom: The Racial History of an Idea, forthcoming from Princeton University Press.
