Katherine (Rin) Heflin

Rin Heflin grew up in Silver Lake, KS, and before moving to the Upper Valley for medical school was living most recently in Philadelphia, PA. While focusing on women’s health and American Studies in college at Stanford University, she worked at a sexual health center as well as at an ObGyn/REI clinic; she also rowed in the Varsity Lightweight boat. After college, she completed two years of AmeriCorps direct service with survivors of domestic violence. Rin then moved to systems-level work by acquiring a Master of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health and worked for several years on health policy at the state and federal levels through nonprofits for a wide range of state Medicaid agencies. Throughout these various roles, Rin has focused predominantly on addressing health access and outcome disparities for disadvantaged populations. She has also frequently volunteered as a sexual health educator.

Franklin Pierce 2023

Hello, my name is Garrisson Duvivier and I am from Brockton, MA a small city 30 minutes south of Boston. I am currently in the MPAS program at Franklin Pierce University class of 2023 and I studied for my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at Gordon College in MA. While at Gordon I was a member and Captain of the Men’s Basketball Program and currently hold the records for the all-time leader in rebounding and 2nd all-time leader in points scored. After graduating in 2019 I worked as a Neurological Exercise Specialist at Journey Forward in Canton, MA before matriculating into the FPU MPAS program. At Journey Forward I developed activity-based therapies for individuals with spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders. It was a job that educated me greatly on population of individuals who still need to be served a great deal, in terms of the resources available for them. In addition to working, I also volunteered as a 4th grade basketball coach for the community league in Brockton during the winter of 2019. I enjoyed my time coaching the co-ed team (with my younger sister playing as well) and learned a good deal on how to break complex things down so kids can understand them. In my free time I enjoy watching marvel movies, writing on my blog, and exercising.

Cheryl grew up in a rural suburban town outside of Plymouth, Massachusetts before discovering her love for the mountains at the University of Vermont. While focussing on neuroscience and animal science at university, Cheryl was a member of the NuRhoPsi national honor society, a research assistant, residential advisor, and involved in the Pre-PA club. During her two years after college she took on many roles in her County’s 4-H as a volunteer, including being a board member and mentor. She also competed in dog shows with her dog Bravo. Working back home she worked for a local community hospital in their Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbarics; she also worked as an EMT at an urgent care. There she assisted in surgical procedures, grafting, debridements and specialized in offloading devices for chronic wound patients. Cheryl is very excited to be near mountains again in the Upper Valley. In her spare time Cheryl enjoys staying busy and active; she enjoys hiking, being outdoors, and training and showing dogs.

Kat Amano
Geisel 2022

Kat grew up in West Hills, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. She moved across the country to Western Massachusetts to attend Williams College, where she served as a member of the Outing Club Board, as a Residential Advisor, and as co-captain of the rowing team. She graduated with a BA in English and psychology in 2013. For the next two years, she worked as an English Teaching Fellow at the Emma Willard School—an all girls’ high school in upstate New York, while concurrently earning her Master of Arts in Teaching at Union Graduate College. In 2015, she moved to Boston and joined the Noble and Greenough School community as an 8th and 10th grade English teacher, crew coach, and outdoor adventure leader. Taking a Wilderness First Responder course, leading a spring break trip to the Peruvian Amazon, and working for Chewonki Camp for Girls first sparked Kat’s interest in rural medicine. Additionally, her interests in psychology and emergency medicine prompted her to take an EMT course and to subsequently enroll in Bryn Mawr’s Post Baccalaureate Program. In her leisure time, Kat enjoys exercising, spending time outside, traveling, reading, and cooking.

Emily was raised in a Navy family and moved often. Moscow, Russia, was the most interesting place she has lived but spending all of high school in Hawai’i was the best! She attended Harvard University and graduated with a degree in Evolutionary Biology. She spent her college summers in North Carolina working at Camp Cheerio Adventures, where she took kids rock climbing, white water rafting, caving, canoeing, kayaking, and backpacking, and also met her now-husband, Bill. Cheerio Adventures grew her interest in Wilderness Medicine managing (mostly) minor camper and staff illnesses and injuries (and she learned some great cow jokes, too). After graduating from college, she moved close to the camp, to a tiny town of ~520 people: Piney Creek, NC. She spent her gap years working part-time for Wilkes County EMS on 911 and transport trucks, and as a Medical Assistant at an Urgent Care, and also worked as a substitute teacher and school bus driver! This past year she completed an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship in which she provided free perinatal doula services to under-resourced women in the Upper Valley. She is very excited for her Family Medicine rotation in Valdez, AK, in Feb 2021!
