Shared Decision Making

Shared Decision-Making

I designed and evaluated print and video materials to facilitate shared-decision making for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) discussing hydroxyurea (HU) treatment. The shared-decision making tools included a brochure and video for patients to review before discussing HU with their doctor, an information sheet to facilitate the discussion with their provider during their appointment, and an informational booklet for them to take home after their discussion.

1. Before discussing the medication

An informational brochure was mailed to or given to patients before the appointment where they discussed starting HU treatment. While waiting in the clinic before the discussion with their doctor, they viewed a video narrative of testimonials from patients and parents about their experience deciding whether or not to start taking HU.

2. During discussion about the medication

An information sheet was used during the discussion that listed potential topics that patients and families could discuss with their provider.

3. After discussing the medication

After their discussion with their doctor, they were provided a booklet to take home that included a full summary of the information about HU as well as a pros and cons worksheet to assist them in making their decision.
