Medical Decision-Making

The Rise Lab uses behavioral decision theory to inform their research. The “must reads for lab members include Kahnemann’s Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow; Thaler’s and Sunstein’s Nudge; and Nisbett’s and Wilson’s Telling More than We Can Know. We use these theories to develop and test interventions to modify patient and provider behavior related to advance care planning and end-of-life decision making. The Barnato Lab is currently working on a new NIH submission that seeks to understand the cognitive, affective, and social mechanisms that explain the influence of early integration of palliative care on reduced end-of-life health services use for patients with advanced cancer.
