2012 Summer Stream Salamander Field Assistant (Central NH)

POSITION
One seasonal Wildlife Technician position is available to work in the lab of Dr. Winsor Lowe at the University of Montana.  Fieldwork will be conducted at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in central New Hampshire.

DURATION and HOUSING
The position will last approximately three months, starting mid-June and ending in late August / early September.  Housing is provided at Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire.  Round-trip transportation to New Hampshire along with travel to local field sites is provided.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The technician’s primary duties will involve surveys of stream salamanders and brook trout in headwater streams of central New Hampshire.  The technician will also assist in setting up and maintenance of artificial stream experiments at the field site.  Work will be in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and technicians should expect to hike to field sites in rough terrain, get wet from working in headwater streams, handle salamanders, use a handheld GPS unit, and experience East Coast humidity and heat. The technician will also be expected to develop and conduct an additional side project of his/her choice under the guidance of the project leader. The technician will be a part of a three-person field crew, thus the successful applicant should work well with others.  Prior fieldwork experience is preferred, but not required.

PAY:  $10.00/hour, 40-hour work week.

2. Roving Stewardship/Youth Program Internships – Northern Forest Canoe Trail (Summer)(NH/VT/NY) – PAID
Want to spend the summer outside? Consider either a Roving Stewardship or Youth Programs Internship with Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Roving Stewardship Interns will complete trail work along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, living in a tent with other interns, staff, and volunteers. Youth Program Interns will work with children ages 10-14 in a program developed to connect rural youth with their backyard waterways. Deadline: March 12th, 2012.
