Me and Hades
Written by Claudia Lane
Me and Hades
just me and Hades
I look to the fields above me
where he sipped my heart like red wine
where pretty ladies dance and sing to the flowers I used to know
but no, Hades isn’t drawn to innocence
the red in my eyes matching his greatest fear
the queen of hearts he picked from the deck, like I was just another flower,
just another one of those ladies
but he still says don’t worry, Sadie
I’m not drawn to other ladies
it’s just me and Hades
just me and Hades
I hear a voice beneath me saying I’m pouring my heart out too fast
I’ve never been good with measuring cups,
always struggled with my shaky grasp
it’s just that I’m not one to moderate,
could never fully latch the clasp
my tears are waterfalls dripping from your tap’s faucet—my hands like pools splashing back to block it
stop it, stop it
Stop it Stop it
I don’t like to hurt but you know I like to bleed out my grit
you mentioned it was the one thing you’ve always wanted
and still you flinch when you look at the veins in my chest
the way you slyly creep up my neck,
the claws of a wolf undoing my vest
the sharpness burning but I don’t mind choking on breath
all you want now is to evade the nightmare you created
do I taste better when I hide my fangs?
The sharpness of my bite slightly faded
the only thing that scares us both is the bloody figure reflected in my eyes, in my head
the pools of tears beneath me now a diluted red
does my heartbeat provoke you,
or do I terrify?
I’m too broken to tell you how I feel
but I sure as hell can show you
it’s a habit I learned from Hades (I’m used to it, i know you)
I know you
