I planned to write this piece in anticipation for our return to the College after spring break. Instead, I currently sit at my kitchen table in Michigan dreaming of Hanover. So I’ll begin by stating this: I hope that all within the Dartmouth community are healthy, physically, mentally, emotionally, and have someone to talk to or a creative outlet to express your anger, sadness, exhaustion, or overall stress regarding the unprecedented nature of today (that’s a word receiving usage uptick). To the ’20s, I am greatly upset about the changes afflicting your class and wish it wasn’t like this. Your anger, disappointment, and sense of injustice is entirely valid. And to the ’24s, I wish we could welcome you personally through Dimensions, but hopefully, we will ensure an even greater, more loving welcome in the fall.

Now let’s talk about Foco and the oatmeal bar.
During finals weekend, my friend Abby and I visited Foco to construct an out of this world oatmeal recipe. I love food and am always looking to take advantage of Foco amenities to kick things up a notch. Now, my target was the oatmeal bar, and luckily you can make oatmeal easily at home, so I will provide instructions and opportunities for at-home and Foco cooking. In the graphic below, you can see what our loaded oatmeal bowl looked like that morning. If you have all the ingredients handy at home, then take ½ cup either instant or old-fashioned oats and 1 cup of water or any milk and then follow package instructions. Once the oatmeal is completed (taste it and make adjustments for sweetness if necessary!), add it to a bowl and get ready to top.
Here are some of the best toppings:

  • 2 tablespoons raisins (golden or red)
  • 2 tablespoons nut butter
  • ½ sliced banana
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons jam (any fruit, I prefer raspberry)
  • Almond slivers or walnut pieces for topping

You can add all the toppings, or only two, dependent on your taste.

You can do exactly this at Foco, as well, as there are raisins, brown sugar, and almonds near the oatmeal and Ma Thayer’s. Head on over to the bagel station to add nut butters—wow, I miss the bagel station more than I would have thought. And that’s how you make the perfect home—or Foco—oatmeal for your 10A or your 9L.  This historical, world-altering moment in time should remind all of us to remain grateful for so many things in life, as it has exposed the true vulnerability of routine and the foundations of human society. Don’t take a Foco cookie for granted; cherish Foco’s “Mardi Gras” night—which had a DJ and bumping music; always remember to thank your friends for their existence and appreciate the moments that could suddenly vanish during any time of change.   Stay healthy, Dartmouth!  Stay safe and do your part, Dartmouth!  Remember, the granite of New Hampshire is always in our muscles and our brains.
