Patricia Munseri

Patricia Munseri, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Head, Infectious Disease Unit in the Department of Internal Medicine at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. She received her MPH degree from The Dartmouth Institute and her PhD from the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm)

Her research has mainly focused on HIV and TB diagnostics and vaccinology. She is coordinating a multicenter multi-country phase IIb HIV PrEPVacc vaccine trial. The trial aims at assessing the efficacy of two candidate vaccines in preventing HIV among high-risk populations.

She has coordinated three 3 phase II HIV vaccine trials (HIVIS03, TaMoVac-1 and TaMoVac-2) aimed at assessing optimal routes and doses of an HIV DNA vaccine that would elicit immune responses among healthy individuals. Findings indicated that intradermal route at lower doses elicited a better immune response compared to intramuscular route at higher doses. She was a Principal Investigator for the HIVIS06 trial that aimed at assessing waning immunity from HIV MVA vaccine at three years post immunization and whether a third boost will enhance immunity. This trial showed that a third dose of HIV-MVA was able to boost the level of immune response.

She directed a phase II TB trial DARPIAT a trial that recruited 650 adolescents that aimed at assessing the ability of the Dartmouth DAR-901 vaccine in preventing TB infection. In this trial the vaccine was well tolerated but did not reduce the risk of asymptomatic TB infection.

Dr. Munseri mentors undergraduate and postgraduates in Internal Medicine at MUHAS and is an attending physician in the Infectious Disease Unit at Muhimbili National Hospital.
