Effective altruism saves lives, lifts people out of poverty, and improves the world by using reasoning and evidence to tackle important problems.

Discover the movement embraced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, and philosopher Peter Singer.

If you are reading this, you are in an extraordinary position. With the rise of evidence-driven interventions, it has never been more possible to have a meaningful, positive impact on a massive scale.

We believe all human beings are equal. That’s why we use careful analysis to find the most effective causes which help the most people we can, in the ways that have the most impact on their lives.

But it’s no use answering this question unless you act on it: Effective Altruism is about following through.

Who we are

We are effective altruists at Dartmouth who are passionate about answering the question ‘how can I do the most amount of good?’ We recognize that:

  • We are in a unique position to do good.
  • Through rational decision making, we can make a much larger difference.
  • We can, and do, enjoy doing it!

What we do

We are big believers in collaboration and entrepreneurship. All of our members have the opportunity to do hands on, high impact work and to explore diverse career options for the short- and long-term future.

  • We provide career advice to future software developers, entrepreneurs, academics, consultants, sellouts, and all other students who want to maximize their social impact.
  • We have weekly discussions on topics ranging from population ethics to speciesism to scrupulosity to course selection -- and provide gentle introductions to effective altruism for newcomers!
  • We co-host Giving Games, facilitated discussions in which players learn about a short list of effective charities and engage in a friendly and enlightened debate about which charity to donate (real money!) to.
