Whether you’re packing for a trip, embracing a minimalist lifestyle, or are simply looking to eliminate those “IDK what to wear” days, capsule wardrobes help us get off the fast fashion carousel and make us realize how to make the most out of what we already have.

As I spend this fall term in Hawaii (5,000 miles away from nearly all my clothes still locked in controlled storage), I’ve been inspired (or rather forced) to adopt that mindset—packing a limited collection of my favorite essentials, fail-safes, and basics.

Here are a few ideas, thoughts, and takeaways from my island capsule….

My essentials:

1) A cute, lightweight dress

This pink floral piece from Princess Polly is the perfect thing to throw on when you don’t want to think about what to wear (and when you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing anything at all). The fact that it’s super light also means that it’s tuck-able and can easily double as a top!

2) Trousers (or any versatile, neutral-toned pant)

I have been obsessed with the look of baggy, wide-legged pants lately, and these simple black ones from Yesstyle offer a more feminine, tone-downed twist on your classic cargo. Ideal for anything from a night out to an everyday class fit, these are the only pants I packed (and the only ones worth the sweat).

3) A “nice” top

However you define nice, it has to be something you feel your best in. This lacy bralette top from the New Zealand boutique Glassons is crazy comfortable and spices up any bottom you pair with it. Adding a black top (regardless of its cut and texture) to your capsule will also ensure that it goes with anything.

4) Oversized button-up

I thrifted a bunch of these over-sized classics for $3 from the men’s section of goodwill, and I am OBSESSED. Although it’s perfect as a beach cover-up, you could easily dress it up with a french tuck, some fitted pants, and some cute sandals, or leave it unbuttoned over literally anything on windier nights. Hands down my most-worn item of the whole trip.

5) Good fitting shorts

Finding the elusive pair of perfect fitting shorts is an underrated, absolute must for your summer-to-fall capsule wardrobe. My go-to bottoms for any occasion are these well-worn, paper bag-esque shorts from Urban. I adore the cinching around the waist and removed the tie-up belt for a more casual, versatile look. Whether they’re denim, cotton, or corduroy, fit is key. Selecting a pair you feel your best in will automatically make it a capsule piece.

Last thoughts? Honestly, I feel so much freer. Financially and ethically, living out of a capsule wardrobe lifts a huge burden off your wallet and conscience.

When I used to think of them, hordes of denim jackets, black jeans, and classic t-shirts came to mind, but it’s important to remember that there are no rules! Although many tend to gravitate towards simplicity, capsule wardrobes are not exclusive to the minimalist aesthetic. For me, the most important thing is choosing items that bring me joy and make me feel good.
