The Program
Launched in the fall of 2023 under Student Life and currently overseen by Community and Campus Life, the Open Expression Facilitator program provides on site, trained faculty and staff serving as viewpoint-neutral observers at qualifying events. A facilitator’s primary responsibility while on site is to serve as a secondary responder to disruption if it arises, ideally enabling the program to move forward and, hopefully, preventing any disciplinary or legal action being taken against those disrupting the event. Since its inception, the facilitators have supported nearly 75 student, staff and faculty sponsored events including: presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, former U.S. representative Liz Cheney, former governor Doug Burgum, Queer History Celebration Keynote, Free Speech Symposium, Solidarity March for Gaza, Panel on Israel-Hamas, Debate on Gun Control with Spike Cohen and David Hogg, and more.
Role of Facilitators
The Facilitator’s role is to support recognized student organization, departmental, faculty and/or institutional events and open expression policies on campus and to offer guidance on the Freedom of Expression and Dissent (FED) policy and guidelines.
