Dartmouth is dedicated to fostering a rich educational environment by supporting the open expression of diverse perspectives on campus. We encourage departments, programs, and recognized organizations to invite speakers with the widest possible range of views who can contribute meaningfully to our community's intellectual and cultural growth. We also encourage students to participate in conferences, visits, and other in-person experiences that allow them to engage directly in dialogue and advocacy across the country and around the world. The following programs are available to offer guidance and support.
Dartmouth Dialogues
Dartmouth Dialogues is our shared commitment to expanding programming across the institution dedicated to facilitating conversations and skills that bridge political and personal divides. Dartmouth Dialogues drew more than 8,700 community members to events in fall of 2024 and provided training in dialogue skills to more than 1,000 students and more than 100 faculty and staff.
The Dialogue Project
The Dialogue Project provides training in the development of essential collaborative dialogue skills—fostering a community that cultivates the respectful and open exchange of ideas. Programming for students, faculty, and staff builds skills in such topics as empathetic listening, managing emotions, navigating conversations, and finding points of connection.
Open Expression Facilitators
Campus and Community Life supports an Open Expression Facilitator program where faculty and staff are trained to serve as neutral observers without bias at student organization, departmental, faculty, and institutional events, while also providing guidance on the Freedom of Expression and Dissent policy. An Open Expression Facilitator's role is to provide a presence at, and, if necessary, address disruption at qualifying events.
Discourse Funds
Dartmouth student organizations play an integral role in facilitating dialogue, enhancing the student cocurricular experience, and elevating the profile of Dartmouth. With that, these funds intended to provide active, recognized undergraduate, graduate, and professional student organizations in good standing with the opportunity to apply for funding for programming promoting discourse at Dartmouth. All students additionally have the opportunity to apply for funding to participate in off-campus, in-person experiences that allow them to engage in dialogue and advocacy.
