instrumentation

Our measurements are based primarily on gamma spectroscopy, with a 350 ft2 lab in Fairchild Hall room 005. We operate five Mirion (formerly Canberra) Broad-Energy Germanium (BEGe) 3830 detectors, one BEGe 5030, and one Well-Type 3523 detector. We also use inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICPOES) in our Materials Characterization Lab for measurements of major/trace elements and carrier tracers in chemical separation, ICPMS through the Dartmouth TEA Core, and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) for low-level radium isotopes in the Dartmouth Radiogenic Isotope Lab. Additional sample processing is accommodated in our in Materials Characterization Lab with Spex 8000M ballmill, Spex 8530 shatterbox, Wiley Mini-Mill and others.
