Source derogation is a product of inoculation even when it is unintentional, and perhaps, in ways that could be detrimental, such as increasing cynicism.

Inoculation Theory, Source Derogation, and Media Credibility
My talk will explore how inoculation functions as media criticism and as a potential effect of media criticism, with particular emphasis on source derogation. I will consider how inoculation messaging could be used against media credibility, as a way to strengthen existing distrust of media in general, or specific media voices, as well as how inoculation messaging could attempt to protect against media criticism. That is, two aspects of source derogation will be covered: (1) the intentional derogation of media, and (2) unintentional inoculation effects of, and as a result of, media criticism.
