One of the benefits of being in Tokyo this fall was the opportunity to get to know some truly first-rate journalists, and I was particularly delighted to meet Yuka Hayashi of the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Hayashi and producer Paolo Bosonin interviewed me for their documentary about the significance of Manchukuo (the former Japanese colony in Manchuria, China). The film is short but quite rich in content — and shows the deeply personal nature of the war memories that weigh heavily upon East Asia.
