Headed to Washington to deliver talks on different Japan-related projects.
Tuesday, March 29: “Japan’s Security Evolution,” CATO Institute, 12:00pm. Will be speaking on a panel with OSD’s Amy Searight and CRS’s Emma Chanlett-Avery (chaired by Christopher Preble). I will be discussing my recent CATO policy paper that situates Japan’s 2015 security legislation within a broader pattern of gradual — and still minimalist — rearmament and activism.
Wednesday, March 30, 12:00pm: Roundtable at Council on Foreign Relations on Japanese nationalism, with Sheila A. Smith of CFR. I will be presenting new research (co-authored with Waseda University’s Chikako Ueki) that argues that, contrary to the widespread meme, nationalism is not only not “on the rise” in Japan, the country exhibits growing cosmopolitanism over time.
Thursday, March 31: “Is Nationalism on the Rise in Japan?” Presenting this paper at the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, George Washington University, 12:30pm.
