As a dispute grinds on between Japan and South Korea, many voices blame the haunt of the past. As the author of a book about the political effects of historical memory, I’m always up for talking about memory. But as I argue in my Washington Post / Monkey Cage essay, the causes of current acrimony lie very much in the present: specifically, in present-day politics in South Korea.
