The C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth has appointed Dr. James D. Sargent as its new director.

James D. Sargent is the Scott M. and Lisa G. Stuart Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He also holds appointments as Professor of Pediatrics and of The Department of Biomedical Data Sciences. He is the Co-Director of the Cancer Control Program at  Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Dr. Sargent is an authority on the impact of mass media on risky behavior in childhood and adolescence. He has spoken and written widely on a range of cancer prevention topics.

Previously, The Koop Institute focused on physician education. Under the new director, it will now make prevention science the priority.

The mission of the C. Everett Koop Institute is to advance health and well-being through disease prevention. The Institute seeks to enhance our understanding of the threats to health posed by consumer products--tobacco, alcohol, and highly processed foods--and to promote policies and interventions that protect the public health.
