Community Science Map Dashboard

The Culvert Crawlers Community Science Map is a free and open-source web application that visualizes data collected by the survey about stormwater infrastructure. This is the main landing area for finding and interacting with data, both logged in and without logging in. It is designed to be easy to access and navigate.

For more information about the dashboard, please refer to our technical documentation.

Login and Access Information:

Without logging in, you can look at the Map with Survey Photos tab at left to view existing submissions from all users, including photos and pop-up information.

For more features, you will need to register as a reporter, researcher, or manager:

  • Reporter: edit your own previous submissions
  • Researcher: edit your own previous submissions and view flow chart of the statistical vulnerability model
  • Managers: access and modify all submission data. This role is limited to preserve data integrity. If you are interested in a manager role, please reach out to charis.ford.morrison.boke@dartmouth.edu or aletha.e.spang@dartmouth.edu

Site Organization

Once logged into the dashboard, you will see several tabs on the left side, which are explained below.

Community Science Map Page

The Community Science Map page shows a map of culverts, color-coded by risk, which is built upon a statistical modelling using K-Means and PCA (Principal Components Analysis). Clicking on a marker also retrieves additional information such as reporter email, culvert latitude and longitude, and additional information reporters put in the form.

At the top of this page are several tabs. The Data Analysis tab shows a flowchart for how the statistical model is built and used to calculate vulnerability and risk score for each culvert. Clicking on each bubble of the flowchart shows python coding language defining each function.

The Locate Nearest Survey Point tab allows you to enter a physical address in order to see the closest stormwater infrastructure point.

The Export Data tab allows you to export data from the interactive map as a shapefile (GIS software), geojson, kml (Google Earth), or csv (table). Feel free to share these data or use in analyses.

The Manager Editing Tool page is accessible via login to those who are registered as
managers* only. Managers can access and modify all submission data:
therefore this role is limited to preserve data integrity.

Map with Survey Photos

The Map with Survey Photos page shows survey data from all users. The points are aggregated into clusters when the map is zoomed out, but individual points can be seen when zoomed in.

Click on any point to see a pop-up with information about that infrastructure, including the coordinates, reporter, type, date, and condition.

This map can be accessed at any time without logging in.

On this page, users can view and edit any survey reports they have previously submitted in the Survey tool. To access the records, log in with your username; make sure the email associated with that username is the same one you used (case sensitive) when reporting data in the Survey tool.

Statistical Modeling

This page includes a map of user submissions with a predicted risk score, modeled with K-Means and PCA (Principal Components Analysis).

This page is accessible to managers only. If you are interested in a manager role, please reach out to charis.ford.morrison.boke@dartmouth.edu, or aletha.e.spang@dartmouth.edu.
