Who do we serve?

The MShop welcomes all members of the Thayer community, with priority placed on course- and research-related needs. We also support Thayer clubs as time permits.

Users outside of Thayer must meet with the Shop Manager to discuss their needs.

3D Printing

All parts are printed in PLA material on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are parts in the queue, your job may be delayed. Shop staff will email you when parts are ready for pickup in the cubbies outside the MShop (C027), or in your chosen pickup location. Parts that finish printing on weekends and holidays will be put out for pickup on the next workday.

Requirements:

  1. Parts must be smaller than the total volume of the print bed, which is 9in wide x 8in deep x 8in tall.
  2. Files must be saved as .STL (In Solidworks, in the “Save As” pop-up window, below “File Name,” click the “Save as Type” drop down menu and select .STL file.)

*A 3–4 workday lead time is advisable. This form is only for Prusa-PLA printing. For all other types of printing, email  mshop@dartmouth.edu

If you have a personal print or are not associated with Thayer, please visit the Cable Makerspace.

Research Support

We offer planning, concept documentation, design/build services, and instructional support for research-related activities. Whether starting a project from scratch or seeking guidance on an existing plan, we aim to offer reliable and efficient assistance aligned with manufacturable solutions.

Several levels of service are available:

Level 1. The researcher is trained for competency to execute their work with minimal supervision.

Level 2. An MShop technical instructor (TI) or teaching assistant (TA) supports the researcher through fabrication of their work.

Level 3. The work is done by an MShop technical instructor (TI) or teaching assistant (TA).

Level 4. Work that cannot be completed by the MShop is outsourced to the “Job Shop” or Specialty Shop.

Note: All service levels require the Principle Investigator (PI) to be cc’d on all communications regarding work requests, materials, and projected costs. Level 3 and 4 support may incur a “Fee for Service.”

Teaching Support

We help faculty enhance their teaching with MShop resources and facilities.

This service requires an intake form and discussion at least one month prior to the beginning of the term.
