Mission
At the MShop at Dartmouth, our mission is to cultivate a community of scholars who excel in problem-solving and teamwork through hands-on projects in physical design and realization. We strive to leverage the power of liberal arts education to produce innovative solutions to global challenges, engaging our community in teaching and research.
“To prepare the most capable and faithful for the most responsible positions and the most difficult service.”
Sylvanus Thayer
Goals
We support design innovation by providing a suite of tools, techniques, and training that enable engineering creativity in a safe environment. We believe in the power of interdisciplinary engineering and our liberal arts setting to drive progress, and we work to enable multi-disciplinary projects and cross-campus collaborations that break down barriers and spark new ideas.
Our flexible toolset and accessible training program build core competencies in machining, empowering students and faculty to incorporate fabrication in their research and projects. We are committed to providing a comfortable, competent, and safe workshop environment, where our community of scholars can thrive and bring their ideas to life.
Principles
Our instructors are professional and committed to enabling our students to succeed in a non-competitive and safe environment. Teaching takes many forms, including managing student design teams, providing opportunities for practicing skills and training student staff.
We prioritize the cultivation of interdisciplinary collaborations across campus, and we measure our performance based on our clients’ satisfaction. The 5S principles of tidiness and workplace standardization guide us, and our effective training program emphasizes hands-on experience to build core competencies in machining and fabrication.
