Favorite tool/skill: 3D printer
Hometown: Buena Park, CA
A skill you like to teach? I enjoy teaching design for 3D printing, both in CAD and in the slicer settings to get high quality parts.
Why the Mshop: “To help others make things and learn how to myself!”
How has the Mshop impacted you? “The Mshop has been an incredible resource in making engineering projects accessible to create, both with the physical machines and the people that work there. I’ve always been inspired by the expertise and knowledge of the TIs, who consistently have been more than happy to help out with problems or give advice at sticking points. I’ve learned so much from just hanging around them as well as working with the machines.”

Favorite tool/skill: Trak K3 Knee Mill
Hometown: North Woodstock, NH
Why the Mshop: “I took a tour with Julian (‘23, a TA) when I was a prospective student, and from that point on, I knew I wanted to attend school here. After hanging around the shop the first few weeks of freshman fall, they offered me a job and I haven’t left! It’s really a unique opportunity for students to learn to run powerful, precise machinery from people with a lifetime’s experience in the industry.”
How has the Mshop impacted you? “I love learning the “doing” side of engineering. Drawing up a part and then making it come to life on a mill is a holistic way to learn. It has made the engineering that I’ve learned in classes have a practical application. That said, learning is only my second favorite part of working there. I always tell people that I came to the MShop for the machines and stayed for the people. The shop staff and TAs are some of the kindest people on campus. It is an incredible community to be a part of.”

Why the Mshop: “I’m excited to master fabrication skills at the machine shop and get the chance to share it with others. Knowing these tools and mindsets hugely expands the possibilities of things we as student engineers can create!”
How has the Mshop impacted you? “It has introduced me to an incredibly community of people who “build the engineers”. The dedication, professional experiences, and the love for teaching of people at the MShop makes one believe that anything can be learned. Hugely thanks to the team here and at Thayer, I’ve realized that I can become an engineer, too.”
Want to join our team?
Becoming an MShop teaching assistant (TA) is a great opportunity!
MShop Hours: 8-4:30 PM Monday-Friday
TAs work closely with staff to provide guidance to students and oversee the use of the MShop. Our TA program offers valuable experience in leadership, communication, and technical skills, and provides an opportunity to help fellow students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to complete their projects with confidence.
There are two requirements to work in the shop. First, you have to work a total of 12 hours per week and the shifts need to be 4 hours each. Second, you need to commit to another term, with preference given to applicants that can do consecutive terms.
The reason behind these two requirements is that we invest our time and resources in to training so that you will then be able to assist shop users.
Training is a combination of online(done at the shop) and hands on activities.
If you would like to get an idea of the training that a teaching assistant goes through please join our MShop TA Canvas page.
If you can commit to the requirements:
Interested in applying, email mshop@dartmouth.edu with your information and a brief statement of interest. Look for a reply from us as the new term approaches and job openings arise!
