Performance Expectations

  • Work expectations – Paddock work comes first.  Complete the primary duties listed below at the beginning of your shift.  You are allowed to study if there is time left over after completing these tasks.  If a staff member gives you a task, you are expected to stop what you are doing and complete the task, even if you have begun to study.  We will never give you “busy work.”  Every task is for the betterment and function of the library.
  • Management – All of the Paddock staff serve as supervisors of student workers, not just the Music Library Supervisor.  If a staff member asks you to complete a task, please do so right away.  Do not wait until the end of your shift.
  • Punctuality is very important, so please be on time for your shifts.  Email Paddock.Music.Library@Dartmouth.edu AND call (646-3234) the Paddock staff if you will be late — someone may be waiting for you to arrive so that they can go to a meeting or an appointment.
  • Communication – Answer emails within 24 hours during the workweek, (Monday-Friday).
  • Customer Service – Always treat library patrons as you would want to be treated and make sure you’ve asked them if they have found what they came in for.  We use the “10-4” rule.  If a patron is ten feet away, we acknowledge them with a look, smile, or welcoming gesture.  If a patron is four feet away, we give a verbal greeting.  A simple “Hello” or “Good afternoon” goes a long way!
  • Headphones – Please do not use headphones while working at the front desk.  You need to be aware of patrons and what is going on in the library.  You may wear headphones while shelving and shelf-reading.
  • Food – If you must eat during your shift,  take your food to the table in front.  Keep the circulation desk clean for books and scores.
  • Follow through on assignments, including Canvas training and quizzes.
  • If you have questions or suggestions, please let us know.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Sign-In using the “Circulation Assistant Shift Checklist” located in the paddockstudents Google Drive.  Complete all fields, noting exact arrival/departure times.
  • Clock-in using the Kronos system, noting exact arrival/departure times.  Enter the jobnet code for every time entry.  Hours worked from 8AM-8PM are job code C3849.  Hours worked from 8PM-10PM are job code C3874.  If you are working a shift combining both codes, please end the first shift at 8PM and create a separate entry to start the next shift at 8:01PM.
  • Shelve items from the shelving cart at the beginning of your shift (15 minutes of shelving per hour worked.  Ex: 4-hour shift = 1 hour shelving)
  • Shelf read a portion of the stacks every time you work. (15 minutes of shelving per hour worked.  Ex: 4-hour shift = 1 hour shelf reading.)  If you complete shelving early, make up the rest of your time shelf-reading.  (Ex: 4-hour shift = 2 hours of work in the stacks so if you complete the shelving in 15 minutes, you should spend an hour and forty five minutes either shelf-reading or working on other tasks as assigned by the staff.)
  • Refill paper in the copier and fixing paper jams as needed
  • Basic circulation functions: check-in, check-out, renewals, holds, and Reserve
  • Help patrons use the moveable stacks, the audio and video equipment, computers, the photocopier/scanner, directional questions for call numbers, basic searching on the Library website, and assistance with Borrow Direct and DartDoc interlibrary loans
  • Special projects as assigned by library staff
