Books and Scores

Books are shelved by call number beginning in the back study room (at call numbers beginning with A) and then moving into the moveable stacks. The largest sections of books are in the ‘ML’ and ‘MT’ classes.  However, we also have books in classes ‘A-L’ and ‘N’-‘Z’. ‘A-L’ are at the end of the Collected Works and N-Z are located right after the ‘MT’ books.  The oversize books are located on the shelves to the left of the entrance to the mini score room.

  • Collected works are complete works of composers. Paddock’s collected works are located on stationary stacks in the back of the library.  These books are used in the library only.
  • Some issues of current journals are on shelves in the Serials room. The most recent issue received will be on top and if you lift the shelf, you will find back issues. The journals are in alphabetical order by title. If you don’t find the journal title on these shelves, check the library catalog. The title may be shelved in the books stacks by its call number, it may be in the Library Depository, or it could be available electronically.
  • Miniature scores or “mini” scores are located to the left along the wall as you walk in the small back room next to the serials room. They are in call number order and can be checked out. When a patron is looking for a score, you can tell if it’s a mini score by looking at the catalog record for the item. It should state miniature score in the Description field.
  • Reference books are on the stacks along the wall to the left opposite the beginning of the moveable stacks. These books are used in the library only.
  • Reserve books, scores and media are located behind the circulation desk. Students may check out a maximum of 3 reserve items at one time.  The loan period for these items will show on Sierra when you check them out. They are usually 2 hour loans, but may be  24 hour or 4 hour. The Reserve fines are $1.00 per hour during the term. This is raised to $5.00 per hour during reading period and exam time.
-If a patron checks out a Reserve book less than 2 hours before closing, the item is due the next day, one hour after opening.
-Books and scores that are on Reserve may leave Paddock, but media that are on Reserve must be used in the Library. Students should search Course Reserves in the Library catalog to see what physical items are on Reserve and whether they are checked out and when they are due back.
-Professors may also have electronic Reserves for assigned listening and reading.  Students should check the Course Media Gallery link on their professor’s Canvas site for these items.
  • Music scores are shelved by call number and begin on the shelves in the back “mini score” room. They wrap around the corner and along the wall in the front library room and run up to the CD cabinets and then over to the moveable stacks. Before checking out or checking in scores, always look to make sure all the parts are there. We keep scores checked out to patrons if they are missing parts when returned. The oversize scores are shelved in the back “mini score” room on a marked stack.
  • Theses in music (Masters, Honors, and Undergraduate) are located at the beginning of the Reference shelves.  These may be checked out by library patrons. These are shelved by Author – Alpha.
