Breaks

  • According to the Dartmouth College Employment Policies and Procedures Manual, all employees who work more than 5 consecutive hours are expected to take a 30-minute meal break. For hourly employees, the meal break will be unpaid. Hourly employees who wish to work through their meal break must obtain advance authorization to do so from their manager. Employees will be paid for all hours worked.
  • According to college policy, you are only offered a break if you are working five or more hours.  However, Paddock extends breaks to students who desire them if they are working four or more hours.  All breaks should be prearranged with the staff members on duty and should not exceed fifteen minutes unless otherwise approved.
  • On the rare occasions you may work an 8 hour shift, you should take an hour unpaid break.  You may split this time into half hour or fifteen minute blocks if you wish, but should always discuss this with the staff person on duty at the beginning of your shift.
  • You may not use your breaks to leave early.
  • Note all breaks in the Circulation Assistant Checklist in the Google Drive.
  • If you are working a two hour or less shift falling during the lunch hour (11AM-2PM), you should not take a break.  This is the time during which staff members take their breaks and student coverage is needed at the desk.
