Course Outline

17080084_sThe Patient Advisors Course has three modules. Each module, you will spend 1 to 3 hours reading, watching videos, listening to articles, and working on simple exercises. The course is part of a web site called Canvas made by the company Instructure. You access all of the course materials through Canvas.

Module 1: Vascular Disease. You will read about the basics of common vascular diseases like peripheral artery disease (PAD), stroke, carotid disease, and limb amputation. Afterward, there is a short exercise where you can reflect on what you learned about vascular disease. We will answer the questions:

  • What is vascular disease?
  • What causes vascular disease?
  • How is vascular disease treated?

Module 2: Vascular Disease Research. You can read about the process of research, types of research studies, and how research is funded. Then you can look at a real research study, and understand the type of research being done. We will answer the questions:

  • What is clinical research?
  • What are different types of research studies?
  • How are research studies funded?

Module 3: Patient Advisors in Vascular Disease Research. You can learn more about the new role of being a Patient Advisor, and hear the personal stories of other people like you with vascular disease. Then, you will have a chance to tell your story about vascular disease. We will answer the questions:

  • What makes research “patient-centered?”
  • What does a Patient Advisor do?
  • How can I become a Patient Advisor?

At the end of the course, you will take a short survey about the course and receive a certificate of completion.
