1L10.30 Cavendish Experiment

Courses: P3, P13, P15

We have setups for the Cavendish experiment in rooms 104 and 111 (it is not trivial to move them to another room). Introduce this experiment toward the beginning of the class period, as it takes some time (at least 30 minutes) for it to damp down once the weights are moved.

Setup: To adjust these apparatuses it is first critical to make sure the pendulum is centered in its housing. Do this by adjusting the housing's angle against the wall. [It may be useful at some point to figure out a method to isolate them from the wall's vibrations.]

Check the adjustment of the torsional fiber. Have the large balls rotated one way or the other, and see where the inner balls settle down to after an hour or two. They should be very close to the glass envelope, but not quite touching it. When adjusting the torsional fiber, make very very small changes and then wait for an hour or more to see where it settles down now.
