This is a device from our historic instrument collection, circa 1790 (Hood 2002.1.34915). The central bell is connected to ground, the outer bells to high voltage (~5000 V). The clappers will undergo charge separation and be attracted to one bell, will pick up or drop off charge on contact, and will then be attracted to the opposite bell. Apparently Franklin used this as a lightning warning alarm.
Use one of the Pasco DigiRamp power supplies to provide high voltage but low current.
