An IR camera's output is displayed on a screen and the camera pointed at different objects. Note that the camera is seeing infrared output -- which is NOT the same thing as temperature. If you point it at an aluminum cube with one mirrored side, one black side, one white side, and one brushed aluminum side, you'll get four very different temperatures even though the cube is evenly heated.
