Summary: Roberto is the youngest of 10 children, and has a talent for telling stories. At age 6, his mother leaves him at a government institution to help poor children, believing that it will mean a better life for him. But the reality of the institution is very different, and by age 13, Roberto has tried to run away so many times that the headmaster has given up on him. Margherit, a French educator, comes to Brazil to do research and tries to get close to him. Eventually they develop a relationship that will give Roberto a belief in his future.
