If We Get Experience Right, Everything Else Will Follow
Tom Manion is the former President and CEO of New London Hospital (NLH) and has recently been named Chief Operating Officer of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). NLH and DHMC are both members of the Dartmouth Health system. Tom serves on several nonprofit and association boards in New Hampshire, as well as being a state appointed member of the Legislative Commission on the Interdisciplinary Primary Care Workforce. Manion joined NLH in March of 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, after serving as the Vice President of the University of Vermont Health Network’s Porter Medical Group in Middlebury, Vermont.

The Launch for The Care Experience Collaborative (CEC)
Promise Partnership i3 Learning Collaborative Learning Session
The CEC is part of the Promise Partnership, a coproduction learning health system initiative that is jointly sponsored by The Dartmouth Institute at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (TDI) and Care Experience in the Value Institute at Dartmouth Health (VI). Promise aims to deliver on a bold vision to bring the collective expertise of the Dartmouth community to bear to provide the best possible care, experience and outcomes for our workforce and the people we serve. Our approach is derived from concepts of Coproduction and Learning Health Systems and is based on the Dartmouth Coproduction Learning Health System model. The CEC is part of the improvement, implementation, and innovation core (i3 Core) of Promise, which focusses on optimizing healthcare quality, value and experience outcomes, and its work aligns with the Beryl Institute vision of Human Experience and the DH system Care Experience mission to create a caring, welcoming, and trusting care environment for patients, families, and our healthcare workforce.

Dr. Raymond Osarogiagbon is Chief Scientist at Baptist Memorial Healthcare, Director of Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program and Thoracic Oncology Research Group at the Baptist Cancer Center, and Research Professor at Vanderbilt University and a member of the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center. Dr. Osarogiagbon’s research interests center around improving population-level outcomes of cancer care by improving care delivery systems and processes.

Tait Shanafelt MD
Organizational Efforts to Cultivate Healthcare Professional Well-being: Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic
Tait Shanafelt is the Chief Wellness Officer, Associate Dean, and Jeanie and Stewart Richie Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Shanafelt is a hematologist oncologist whose clinical work focuses on the care of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In addition to his leukemia research, Tait is an international thought leader and researcher in the field of physician well-being and its implications for quality of care. His pioneering studies in this area nearly 20 years ago are credited with helping launch the entire field of organizational efforts to promote care team well-being.

Maureen Bisognano is an internationally recognized nurse and healthcare improvement leader serving as the President Emerita and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and Instructor of Medicine at T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard. While at IHI Maureen fueled the global movement “What Matters to You”. These four profound words can help us co-create better care for patients and better experiences of caring for our teams. Ms. Bisognano will share her insights on how to create work environments that foster team well-being and joy in work and deep patient engagement.

Joseph O. Jacobson MD, MSc
Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities in Deploying a Learning Health System in Oncology
Joe Jacobson joined Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2011 as the Institute’s first chief quality officer, overseeing many clinical quality and patient safety programs across Dana-Farber and its affiliates, and representing Dana-Farber in regional and national quality improvement efforts. He stepped down from the role in February 2020 to serve as Senior Advisor for Quality Projects. He focuses on clinical process measurement and improvement, patient safety, efficiency and effectiveness of care, and leadership development. He is a practicing thoracic medical oncologist.
Before joining Dana-Farber, Dr. Jacobson served as the chairman of medicine at North Shore Medical Center. As part of the Partners Healthcare system, he co-developed the Partners Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program. He has an extensive track record in quality measurement and quality improvement, serving as a founding member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, as co-developer of the ASCO/ONS Chemotherapy Safety Standards and as co-designer of the ASCO Quality Training Program. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
