The following courses are offered by the Division of the Humanities. Humanities 1 and 2 are intended for election by first-year students. Humanities 2 may be elected to satisfy the First-Year Seminar requirement, after completion of Humanities 1.
1. The Classical Tradition

Selected texts of Western literature from Homer to the twentieth century. The course alternates between lectures and discussion sections, with emphasis on student participation and essay writing. Readings may include: Ovid, Metamorphoses; Wolfram von Eschenbach, Parzival; Dante, The Divine Comedy; Cervantes, Don Quixote; Marx, The Communist Manifesto; Chekhov, The Cherry Orchard; Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams; Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway; and a selection of sonnets from Petrarch to Baudelaire.

A continuation of Humanities 1. Readings may include: Aeschylos, Agamemnon; Homer, The Odyssey; Christine de Pizan, The City of Ladies; Molière, The Would-Be Gentleman; de Graffigny, Letters from a Peruvian Woman; Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther; Austen, Emma; Kafka, “In the Penal Colony” and other short texts and Walcott, Omeros.
