The following courses are offered by the Division of the Humanities. Humanities 1 and 2 are intended for election by first-year students. Humanities 2 may be elected to satisfy the First-Year Seminar requirement, after completion of Humanities 1.
1. The Classical Tradition

Selected texts of Western literature from Homer to the twentieth century. The course alternates between lectures and discussion sections, with emphasis on student participation and essay writing. Readings may include: Homer, The Iliad; Sophocles, Philoctetes; Chaucer, The Knight's Tale; Shakespeare, Othello; Lafayette, Princesse de Cleves; Beaumarchais, Marriage of Figaro; Freud, Dora; and Kafka, Metamorphosis.

2. The Classical Tradition

A continuation of Humanities 1. Readings may include: Genesis; Homer, The Odyssey; Plato, Symposium; Dante, Inferno; Christine de Pizan, The Book of The City of Ladies; Keats, selections; Woolf, Mrs Dalloway; Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom; and selected short stories by Alice Munro.
Prerequisite: Humanities 1, or the permission of the course director. Students using Humanities 2 to satisfy the First-Year Seminar requirement must have passed Humanities 1. Dist: LIT; WCult: W. Brown, Tarnowski, Williamson.
