The following courses are offered by the Division of the Humanities. Humani-ties 1 and 2 are intended for election by first-year students. Humanities 1 and 2 together satisfy the First-Year Seminar requirement. Students who are exempt from Writing 5 may elect Humanities 1 and 2 as their seminar choice. Students who are not exempt may also elect Humanities 1 and 2 in lieu of their seminar (space permitting), but will take Writing 5 concurrently with Humanities 1.
1. Dialogues with the Classics

An introduction to some of the classics of Western Literature and the ways in which later writers have engaged with them. Readings may include: Homer’s Iliad; Plato’s Symposium; The Book of Job; Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus; Molière’s Tartuffe; Pope’s The Rape of the Lock; Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway; Christa Wolf’s Cassandra. The course alternates between lectures and discussion sections, with emphasis on students’ class participation and essay writing.

2. Dialogues with the Classics

A continuation of Humanities 1. Readings may include: Sophocles’ Ajax, Ovid’s Metamorphoses; Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (selections); Dante’s Inferno; Shakespeare’s Othello; Flaubert’s Madame Bovary; Kafka’s Metamorphosis, T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. The course alternates between lectures and discussion sections, with emphasis on students’ class participation and essay writing.
