Schedule of Events

7 to 9:30 AM – First Registration Time (for field trip participants)
Location: Fairchild Tower 1st floor

Please sign in and pick up your registration packet. Registration packets will contain name tags, a parking pass for Dewey Lot (see campus map), and other information. Parking passes are not needed for weekend parking, so please do not return to your vehicles and delay the field trip departures.

8 AM to 5 PM – Field trips
Location: Depart from behind Fairchild Hall in the Observatory Lot

There are three field trips and advanced registration is required (descriptions below). Bus transportation and bagged lunches are provided.

Please check in at the registration table in Fairchild Tower 1st floor before the trip to pick up your registration packet and bagged lunch. Please bring a water bottle or plan to use the one provided in your registration packet. Trips will have water to refill, but not disposable plastic water bottles.

  1. Mount Moosilauke – This field trip will feature presentations by Dartmouth alumni about recent developments in the bedrock and surficial geology of Mount Moosilauke, including discussions of new maps of the region. The presentations will take place at ~9:30 am in the main hall of the newly renovated Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. After that, field trip participants are free to choose their own adventure for the day. Options include staying at the lodge, hiking independently, or joining the field trip leaders to examine bedrock and surficial geology locations aournd the Moosilauke massif via bus. Buses will leave Dartmouth at 8 am and depart Moosilauke at ~3:30 pm for Dartmouth (returning to campus by ~4:30 pm). [For folks interested in this field trip, it is possible (pending availability) to stay overnight at the Lodge on June 15 and join the trip in the morning. You can use this google form to make a reservation at the Lodge. Additional rates and info for the Lodge are here.] Field trip leaders are Justin Strauss and Ed Meyer, with Peter Thompson ’68 and Woody Thompson ’68.
  2. Mount Cardigan – This field trip will hike to the top of Mount Cardigan and discuss the bedrock and surficial geology of the area along the way. It is a 4-5 mile round trip and the trail is rocky with ~1,200 feet of elevation gain. Buses will leave Dartmouth at 8 am and return by ~4 pm. Field trip leaders are Sarah Slotznick and Meredith Kelly.
  3. Charles Brown Brook – This field trip will explore New England streams and dam removal projects while hiking along the Bill Ballard trail in Norwich, VT. It is a family and dog-friendly hike that is ~3 miles round trip. Buses will leave Dartmouth at 9:30 am and return by ~2 pm. Field trip leaders are Marisa Palucis and Carl Renshaw, with Shannon Sartain ’22.

(Alternate activity) 10 AM to 5 PM – Montshire Museum of Science
Location: Montshire Museum of Science (Norwich, VT)

As an alternative to the field trips, we recommend visiting the Montshire Museum of Science. The entrance fee is covered by the Department (mention you are with the ROX Reunion).

5 to 6 PM – Second Registration Time (for everyone)

5:30 to 9 PM – Welcome BBQ and Refreshments
Location: Montshire Museum of Science outdoor pavilion (Norwich, VT)

The museum exhibits (indoor and outdoor) will be open to participants during the event. Dinner is catered by Wicked Awesome BBQ and there will be vegetarian and gluten-free options.


8 AM to Noon – Department and College Information and Discussion
Location: Filene Auditorium and Lobby, B13, Moore Hall

8 to 9 AM – Breakfast, catered by Lou’s

9 AM – Welcome address, Provost David Kotz
9:15 AM – Updates from the Department of Earth Sciences, Meredith Kelly
9:45 AM – New-ish faculty introductions (Brenhin Keller, Wil Leavitt, Mathieu Morlighem, Marisa Palucis, Sarah Slotznick, Justin Strauss)

10 to 10:30 AM – Coffee break

Location: Fairchild Tower 1st floor, Fairchild and Steele Halls

There will be a poster session highlighting predominantly graduate student research, as well as undergraduate, postdoc, and faculty projects. There will be tours of laboratories and instruments in the Department.

3:30 to 4:30 PM – Keynote Presentation by Alexis Templeton ’93 Gr’96, Professor of Geological Sciences, University of Colorado, Boulder
Location: Wilder Hall, 104

5:30 to 9 PM – Banquet Dinner
Location: Hanover Inn

Buffet dinner honoring retired and retiring professors (W. Brian Dade, Xiahong Feng, and Leslie Sonder). Dinner is provided by Hanover Inn and there will be vegetarian and gluten-free options.


8 to 9 AM – Breakfast, Catered by the Nest

9 to 9:30 AM – Closing Remarks, Meredith Kelly

10 AM to 12 PM – Optional visit to Irving Institute and Dartmouth Sustainability Office
Location: Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society

Visit the new Irving Institute to learn about the Institute’s mission and the building’s energy and sustainability features. Visit the Dartmouth Sustainability Office to learn more about the new Climate Collaborative and Dartmouth’s decarbonization efforts.

10:30 AM to 2 PM – Lunch at Tom Dent Cabin, Option to Paddle to Gilman Island
Location: Tom Dent Cabin, Ledyard Canoe Club

This family-friendly event involves catered lunch at Tom Dent Cabin and an option to do a short paddle on the Connecticut River to Gilman Island (~1.5 mile round trip), where you can explore, swim and enjoy a snack provided by the Department. Boats (kayaks and canoes), paddles, and life jackets (required) will be provided by Ledyard Canoe Club.
