What is SHPE?

SHPE is the largest association of LatinX people in STEM within the whole United States. The organization empowers LatinX students and the LatinX community by offering effective training, mentorship, and programming for the community as a whole.

SHPE has 245 student run chapters and that number grows every year. SHPE’s vision is “a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers”.

Our Chapters 2020-2021 Goals

The Dartmouth College Chapter of SHPE continues to renew its dedication to provide a welcoming environment for professional and academic success at Thayer College of Engineering. Besides offering Engineering students opportunities to polish their professional and academic skills we want to

  • increase the visibility of SHPE members and POC at Thayer
  • Provide resources for Prospective Engineers through advising opportunities
  • Build a safe and open community for ALL STEM students of color

Our members are not only Latinx; they are international students, undocumented students, first generation students, and so much more. This means that the difficulties our community faces are complicated and require collaboration with Thayer to make sure that all these amazingĀ  opportunities are open to all members of the Dartmouth community including SHPE.

Yearly Events

SHPE National Conference – The National Conference held every year allows students to engage in professional development workshops, interact with technology companies, and inform themselves on the path to graduate school. Students may enroll in any of the engineering competitions and scholarships presented by the national organization.

Community Bonding Experiences – The local chapter creates events to build a stronger sense of community within Thayer, across campus, Latinx students, and other minorities STEM. Our events often include apple picking, canoeing, ice cream socials, hiking, and outings.

Professional Development – Our most basic goal is to teach our members the professional skills to navigate the realm of job applications and the workplace. We teach our members the confidence to engage with recruiters, apply to programs. Often our members teach their fellow classmates the professional skills they acquired at SHPE.

Mentorship – Upperclassmen advise freshmen and sophomores on navigating Thayer, Dartmouth, and the job market. We believe the success of our mentorship program lies in: member activity, retention in the major, confidence, academic performance, and use of their resources.

Professor Dinners – We bring in faculty and staff to speak about their experiences, present opportunities to students, and interact with our community. In the past, students are more likely to reach out to professors at Thayer after these interactions. The dinner establishes a personal connection and brings awareness to our community.
