Dartmouth is committed to supporting the health and wellness of everyone in our campus community. As an academic institution, we believe that personal well-being is essential for effective learning, teaching, and research. It does not sit alongside the academic or campus experience, it is an essential component. From time to time, our students may experience medical or personal situations that limit their ability to maintain their studies or thrive in their environment. By taking time away to heal, they can have the space and opportunity they need to take care of themselves before returning to their studies and activities.
To ensure consistency and fairness, our revised time away policies are fundamentally the same for all students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional), with slight modifications related to school-specific differences. The policy and process are identical for all medical reasons, whether physical or mental health. Time spent away for medical reasons will not count against a student’s progress toward their degree.
These new policies are effective on Jan. 2, 2024; however, we are not waiting for that date to implement many important changes designed to help our students.
Dartmouth has begun the search for a new time away director who will provide dedicated ongoing support to help students navigate the process. In the meantime, students who have questions about time away policies, including student health insurance coverage, should reach out to the following staff/resources:
Undergraduates: Mary.B.Nyhan@dartmouth.edu
International Students: Dartmouth Office of Visa and Immigration Services
Thayer School of Engineering: Holly.Wilkinson@dartmouth.edu
Geisel School of Medicine: Taryn.C.Weinstein@dartmouth.edu
Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies: Kerry.H.Landers@dartmouth.edu
Tuck School of Business: Sally.O.Jaeger@dartmouth.edu
Students continue to be part of our community when they are taking time away to heal. Our time away policies are designed to help enhance our campus culture and improve how we interact and care for ourselves and for each other.
