Types of Time Away

Dartmouth offers three distinct categories of time away for both undergraduate and graduate/ professional students: Time Away for Medical Reasons (TAMR), Time Away for Personal Reasons (TAPR), and Time Away for Military Service (TAMS). Each category addresses specific circumstances and has distinct procedures and deadlines. Time away requests will be categorized by one of the three types of time away. If you are unsure which type of time away is appropriate for you and your situation, please contact the Office of Student Time Away. Below is an outline of Dartmouth’s time away categories.

Time Away for Medical Reasons (TAMR)
TAMR should be considered if a break from the academic program may be beneficial due to health challenges, physical or mental, that significantly impact a student’s ability to function successfully or safely while engaging in their academic program at Dartmouth. TAMR provides students time to receive treatment beyond what can typically be provided or engaged in while actively enrolled in their academic program. Students can pursue a TAMR voluntarily; however, in rare circumstances, Dartmouth may require a student to take a TAMR. Please visit the TAMR policy to learn more about the TAMR policy and process. To learn more about TAMR or initiate a request for TAMR, schedule an appointment with the Office of Student Time Away.

Deadline for Time Away for Medical Reasons: The TAMR Request form and required medical documentation must be submitted to the Office of Student Time Away by 5:00 PM EST on the last day of classes for the current term.

Each Dartmouth school has its own unique academic program. When academic needs require a difference in the institutional policy and process, each Dartmouth school (Geisel School of Medicine, the Guarini Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business) has written a school-specific policy and process to guide students taking Time Away for Medical Reasons. To explore how school-specific policies impact your TAMR request, please reach out to the Office of Student Time Away. You can also discuss this with your specific School Contact, identified below.

TAMS may be approved if a student’s military service lasts more than 30 days. For detailed information, please refer to the TAMS policy.
