Areas of Expertise: Statistical analysis of gene expression, microbiome, and patient data. Systems biology, cystic fibrosis, and development of bioinformatic training programs.
Background: Dr. Hampton has been involved in scientific data analysis for over 30 years, beginning with studies of chromium and nickel in Karen Wetterhahn’s lab in 1980. During the 1990s, his work involved signal processing and geospatial data, leading to two patents. His work returned to toxic metals in 2004, when he joined the Dartmouth Superfund program. Early work included the gene expression profiling of the Daphnia response to cadmium, and low dose arsenic toxicity in mice.
Research: Hampton’s current research related to the Superfund program involves arsenic in dual stressor models, such as its ability to interfere with salinity acclimation in the killifish, and its ability to alter the host pathogen response in models of the human airway.
Experience: Dr. Hampton is also involved in the Dartmouth Lung Biology Program, where much of his work involves studies of the airway microbiome. He is a frequent lecturer in bioinformatics at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory and leads bionformatic training initiatives in both the DartCF and Dartmouth Superfund programs.
